Outside Things to do in Thunder Bay in the Winter

You’re moving to Thunder Bay, or you just moved here, and you’re wondering…. what can I do in Thunder Bay outside to have some fun!

In this blog post, I am going to share with you my favourite Thunder Bay outside winter activities so that you can try some new things have some fun!

If we haven’t met before, my name is Danielle Wilson, and I help people just like you buy the types of homes that they REALLY love, and sell the homes that are no longer serving them, in the beautiful community of Thunder Bay!

Trail Running:

Trail running is hands down my favourite winter activity in Thunder Bay.  We have beautiful groomed trails to run where you will find better footing than if you were to run on sidewalks in town.  Centennial Park is one of my favourite trail running locations, and you can hook into the Shuniah Mines system to extend your mileage.  One of my favourite things about running at Centennial is that the trail starts along the river, and in my opinion you can’t beat the sound of running water in the winter, or for that matter the scenic snow frosted pine trees.

Fat Biking:

Fat Biking is also a super fun thing to do in the winter, on groomed trails.  Thunder Bay is actually considered Fat Biking capital of Canada if you weren’t aware.  Shuniah Mines and Mount Baldy have lovely groomed biking trails and you can also bike fairly easily on snow machine trails in the outlying areas.  You can rent Fat Bikes to try out from Fresh Air Experience and you can join the Blacksheep Mountain Biking Club to join in on group rides and learn more about their amazing trail system.

Snow Shoeing:

If running and biking aren’t really your cup of tea, you can venture out on snowshoes and get deeper into the forest and more deeply experience untouched nature at it’s best.  Bring along a camera and capture the beauty of the snow covered forest and wildlife cozy in their natural habitat.  Don’t wear earphones- there is nothing better than the crunch of snow and the sound of your own breath as you move through the wilderness.

Skiing:

When it comes to skiing, there are plenty of options for both cross country and downhill.  You can even rent skis to try out either sport, and it’s always enjoyable to warm up in the chalet with a hot chocolate or other beverage of choice.  Mount Baldy Ski hill also offers tubing if that’s something that you are interested in.

Winter Festivals:

Thunder Bay hosts a variety of winter festivals and snow days which feature anything from ice sculptures and ice skating to snow mazes and  wagon rides.  There are always lots of fun activities to take part in.

*Winter Tip* Remember to dress warmly in layers, as temperatures in Thunder Bay during the winter can be quite cold, and also surprisingly mild (all in the same day!).  Always check local weather conditions and safety guidelines before engaging in outdoor activities.
